History
Our story begins in 2006 when Off Campus Media (then MovingOffCampus.com) was founded
as a website to help college students find apartments. After launching at Washington University
in St. Louis, MovingOffCampus.com expanded to include information on local businesses, events
and more, and expanded to five more universities in Boston, Chicago and St. Louis.
At the time, MovingOffCampus.com wasn’t exactly search engine “friendly” (we still make fun of
our President for it) – we generated awareness and traffic to the website with student teams that would promote the website. And we did it pretty darn well.
Like most websites, we made our first dollars from online advertising. Although our website traffic
was modest, our “response rates” were a lot higher than other websites. And then one day,
someone asked a question:
“Why don’t we let the same people advertising online, also advertise with us on campus?
Won’t that produce better results?”
When we looked around, we realized that a lot of businesses were still advertising
through traditional media, hiring “Brand Ambassadors” to pass out candy and have slumber parties
– it’s like nobody really understood how to reach college students anymore.
And so we gave it a shot. Sure enough, our online response rates increased dramatically and our
on-campus results were stellar. And so like many great innovations at Off Campus Media,
a simple question had proven a point – we know how to reach college students.
Today, Off Campus Media is expanding its Campus Ambassador programs and website,
MovingOffCampus.com, across the U.S. It’s an exciting time.
