When my parents first dropped me off at college my freshman year, I was on my own for the first time in my life. While this may seem liberating, I couldn’t help but feel stranded. I had no foundation. I was meeting new people, without a car, and had little to no knowledge of the places around me. I was, in a sense, trapped in the college campus bubble.

One of my favorite companies that I not only follow on Twitter, but on all social networks is Designer Shoe Warehouse (“DSW”). DSW’s social media management is well-handled: a large amount of interaction is happening between followers because questions are asked and authentic engagement that is entertaining and valuable occurs regularly.

As a marketer, this is very important to me because it represents a significant shift in the buyer-seller paradigm. Think about how consumers made buying decisions 20 years ago. Now think about how you make those same decisions today. Chances are, you’re making decisions much differently and the Internet has had a considerable influence at some point along the way.

Now that I am becoming more socially and politically aware, I am acknowledging what it means to be part of the largest generation in American history, the Millennials. Recently, I came across an independent group called Generation We that has began a campaign to raise awareness of the issues in our country that will eventually become my generation’s responsibility.

Tracking impressions and awareness are undoubtedly important. However, if you aren’t correlating it to revenue, then what does it really mean? 100 million people can be aware of your product but if no one buys it, what’s the point?
